Northwest Scottish Highlands Photography Adventure Workshop

19 - 25 September 2025

with Murray Livingston & Benjamin Maze

Total 6 nights/7 days, 19-25 September 2025 | £2290pp

Explore the Northwest Scottish Highlands on an all-inclusive 6 night/7 day guided backpacking and photography adventure through the remote Great Wilderness with Murray Livingston and Benjamin Maze. Below you will see an itinerary for the trip which includes visiting some of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring views.

The Great Wilderness is a vast area of Scotland home to some of the most remote Munros (a mountain over 3000ft), which makes it the perfect location for a wilderness experience with world-class photographic opportunities. We will cover large distances and substantial elevation gain with heavy packs, so a good level of fitness is required. The trip will be limited to 6 places (plus Murray, Ben, & our mountain leader). Murray has visited the Great Wilderness on numerous occasions since 2023, finding unique compositions and areas of exploration; Ben has extensive backpacking and landscape photography experience in the wilds of Australia and New Zealand. Some of Murray’s photography from the area is below to give you a sense of the grandeur of the mountains we will be hiking through. View Ben’s exceptional portfolio on his website here.

Itinerary

We will be walking into the UK’s most remote mountain area, with the hopes to summit camp on A’ Mhaighdean. Along the way, we will traverse into the Great Wilderness and explore many vistas, lochs, and mountain views. This hike covers roughly 60km and well over 2000m of elevation gain in total. Below is the planned itinerary, but we will add extra small hikes at sunrise/sunset to access particular features for photography, and adjust for weather. Please note: the locations listed below are not guaranteed as safety and conditions will dictate our final route. Most hikers will do this route in much less time, so the added days allow us to take a reasonable pace and make the most of photography opportunities.

Day 1: Transfer from Inverness Airport to Hotel in Kinlochewe, right in the heart of the Northwest Highlands. Opportunity to head out for evening photography on the shore of Loch Maree in one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens. Trip briefing and final gear checks the night before.

Day 2: Drive to Poolewe car park in the morning and start our hike. Hike to Beinn Airigh Charr for summit camp, approx. 11km 857m ascent. Evening sunset photography with outstanding views.

Day 3: Photograph spectacular morning views of the Great Wilderness, Torridon, & the western seaboard. Descend using off-path northeast gulley towards Carnmore, setting up camp near the causeway. Explore the nearby rocky outcrops for sunset photography with the option of a wild swim in the cold loch! Epic wilderness cookout #1. Approx. 8km, 600m descent, 200m ascent.

Day 4: Early morning loch-side photography before starting the hike up towards A’Mhaighdean via the northeast path. Camp at summit with views to Fionn Loch, the Fisherfield Munros, and back towards Beinn Lair, Slioch, and Torridon. Approx 8km, 866m ascent.

Day 5: After morning photography and soaking in the views, descend back down the northeast path underneath Ruadh Stac Beag. Option to ascend Beinn a’ Chaisgein Mor or camp near lochs with views of the Beinn Deargs. Epic wilderness cookout #2 Approx. 8km, 150m ascent.

Day 6: Final morning of photography before returning along the path towards Carnmore and the long walk back to the Poolewe car park. Approx. 20km, 250m ascent. Return to Kinlochewe Hotel for celebratory dinner and drinks!

Day 7: Final morning pack-up before transferring back to Inverness airport.

Experience-First Adventure

This trip is intended as an experience-first adventure. What does this mean? It means appreciating being able to spend time in one of the most beautiful places on planet Earth! While we are all keen photographers & artists, an equal weighting should also be placed on the opportunity to connect with nature, get to know each other better “around the campfire”, and take a breather from modern life. I have found that these kinds of experiences out in nature are amongst the most life-fulfilling, and so I want to share that with others too. As part of this, our mountain leader is also a wilderness chef and will be cooking up some epic meals for the group over the course of the trip!

Further Details

It goes without saying that walking long distances and gaining elevation through mountainous terrain can be arduous at times, especially with the added weight of camera gear! Participants should be able to carry 16-20kg packs for 15km and 1000m of ascent in a single day. Thankfully we will have the help a qualified mountain leader to aid with navigation, safety, and overall enjoyment in the outdoors. Inclement weather can happen at any time of year, but September is considered one of the “best” months with more frequent weather windows and less chance of midges. Your safety will always be a priority in the mountains and we will adjust the camping locations according to conditions. In addition to your camera gear, I can provide a list of suggested hiking items to bring. Tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and mattresses can be borrowed if necessary, but it is strongly recommended to Bring Your Own Gear. You will be much more comfortable in gear that you know, fits you right, and have tested!

The following are not included in the price:

  • Airfares or additional travel requirements

  • Any necessary visas or other travel requirements (please check via your government website)

  • Insurance

  • Additional food & drink (extra snacks & alcoholic beverages for instance)

Flights to Glasgow and Inverness are frequent; we will be providing an airport transfer to & from Inverness to Kinlochewe. A £350 non-refundable deposit is necessary to book your place, with full payment due 8 weeks prior to the start date. Please refer to my standard booking terms and conditions

Benjamin and I are really excited to adventure into one of Scotland’s most remote places and looking forward to this outdoors experience with all of you! If you have any questions, please send me a message.
