Machair, Gaelic for a fertile low-lying grassy plain, explores the unique dune grasslands and beaches of the Isle of Harris, Scotland. This ecosystem only occurs on the Outer Hebrides and certain parts of western Ireland, making it an exceedingly rare landscape with an untold visual story. Murray has visited the island chain on many occasions over the last few years, particularly in the harsh winter months, in order to capture the island’s fascinating landscapes and tell it’s story through this book.
Almost all of the included images are previously unreleased and will only be available to view in the book. Locations featured include the now famous white sands of Luskentyre Beach, Seilebost, Traigh Rosamol, Scarista Mor, and others. In addition, the book features a series of short essays from the artist.

Over October - November 2023 and again in January 2024 I spent a significant amount of time on the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, hiking 80km along the Hebridean Way and immersing myself in the unique Machair landscape, found only here and on the west coast of Northern Ireland. While the white sand beaches of Harris, such as Luskentyre, have become somewhat famous and listed amongst the world's best beaches, the story of the landscape is rarely told. So, the Machair became the focus of much of my photography over the winter months, becoming attuned to the way the tides and weather crush the seashells to form the unique soil and create one of the most biodiverse areas of the UK. The book contains over 50 images from this incredible landscape, ranging from intimate scenes to wide open landscapes.
